Start at Modern Times around noon (it, North Park Beer Co. and Mike Hess open at noon) and work north. On Monday to Wednesday, Poor House may not open until 3:30pm, so leave it until late afternoon. Friday and Saturday evenings are lively, and several stops stay open until midnight; Mike Hess closes at 10pm every night. You cross a sky bridge over the brewhouse floor to reach the tasting room, which pours IPAs, an American lager, a Kölsch, an amber and Freeflow hard seltzers. A mid-century craftsman room of dark wood, brass and globe lamps pours a long rotating list of West Coast and hazy IPAs (Hop-Fu! is the best known) and hoppy lagers, plus guest beers, and the brewery reopened its own kitchen in 2026. Expect a long, changing list of hop-forward ales and low-alcohol lagers, the Plenty for All 'California Pilsner', Jazz Hands fruited sours and the 2AM Bike Ride coffee-vanilla stout, under the owner's own concert-poster artwork. Start at 30th and Upas, walk up to the University Avenue junction, where Mike Hess, North Park Beer Co. and Original 40 are within 300 metres of each other, then follow 30th Street north. Original 40 to Poor House (about 1.6 km along 30th Street) is the long leg. Pure Project's North Park taproom (2867 El Cajon Blvd) and Seek Beer Co. and Barley & Sword at the Brewery Igniter (3052 El Cajon Blvd) are a block or two off the route at El Cajon Boulevard if you want an extra stop. Belching Beaver's North Park tasting room (4223 30th St) is on the same leg, but the brewery said in December 2025 that it wouldn't renew the lease and would leave during 2026, so it's not a fixed stop. California law: you must be 21 to drink, and bars will check ID. Carry a passport or photo driving licence. **Alcohol-free and pacing:** ask at the bar for alcohol-free beers and soft drinks, and remember a half is always fine.
