Route 1 · "The Arches"

The Bermondsey Beer Mile

  • 6 stops
  • About 1 km between first and last stop (straight-line estimate; allow a little more for arch-to-arch detours)
  • Walking: About 15 min
  • Allow 4–5 hours

Best time: Saturday from noon (all six are open: Southwark Brewing from noon to 7pm, The Kernel until 9pm). Friday from 5pm also works. Avoid Monday to Wednesday, when most arches are shut. Opening hours change, so check each venue before you set off.

Start at London Bridge and finish near Bermondsey Jubilee line station, about 10 minutes' walk from The Kernel. On Saturdays you can also do it in reverse: The Kernel opens at 11am and Southwark Brewing shuts at 7pm.

Most arches don't have kitchens. Eat at Maltby Street Market (Ropewalk, Saturday 10am–5pm, Sunday 11am–4pm, Friday evening), at The Kernel's Japanese kitchen, or at the Saturday street-food traders at Bianca Road.

Warm-up option: The Rake (14 Winchester Walk, SE1 9AG), Borough Market's tiny specialist beer bar, is about 10 minutes' walk west of Southwark Brewing and opens daily from noon (11am Saturday).

Several arches are card-only, and the busiest ones stop letting people in when full on Saturday afternoons.

Alcohol-free and pacing: ask at the bar for alcohol-free beers and soft drinks, and remember a half is always fine. Eat along the way, drink water between stops, and skip a stop whenever you like. More tips.
