Westerpark to the Overtoom

Best time: Thursday to Monday; Two Chefs is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Friday or Saturday from about 1pm is ideal: Troost opens at 11am and Two Chefs at 11:30am, and both Gebrouwen door Vrouwen and Craft & Draft are open late. On Thursday and Monday, Two Chefs doesn't open until 3:30pm, so start at Troost at about 2:30pm. Craft & Draft opens at 4pm every day. Opening hours change, so check each venue before you set off.

   Brouwerij Troost Westergas

   Pazzanistraat 25-27, 1014 DB Amsterdam · Bus 21 from Centraal to Van Hallstraat/Westergasfabriek, or tram 5 to its Westergasfabriek terminus

   Brewpub in a former gasworks building in the Westergas culture park, brewing on site with the tanks behind the bar. There's food all day, and a brewery tour every Saturday at 4pm (book ahead). Open from 11am daily, until midnight Monday, 1am Tuesday to Thursday, 3am Friday and Saturday, and 11pm Sunday.

   Two Chefs Taproom

   Hugo de Grootplein 7, Amsterdam

   Taproom of Two Chefs Brewing, founded in 2012, with 16 taps of its own beer brought in fresh from the brewery almost daily, plus bar bites and a restaurant next door at number 11. Open 3:30pm to 11pm Monday, 3:30pm to midnight Thursday, 11:30am to 2am Friday and Saturday, and 11:30am to 11pm Sunday. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

   Gollem’s Proeflokaal

   Overtoom 160, 1054 HP Amsterdam

   The Gollem group's eetcafé on the Overtoom: 22 taps and around 120 bottles, with Flemish dishes such as stoofvlees and mussels cooked in beer. Open 4pm to 1am Monday to Thursday, 3pm to 3am Friday, 2pm to 3am Saturday and 2pm to 1am Sunday.

4. Gebrouwen door Vrouwen BAR

   Jan Pieter Heijestraat 119D-h, 1054 MD Amsterdam

   Flagship bar of Gebrouwen door Vrouwen (‘Brewed by Women’), the brewery started by two Amsterdam sisters, with all their beers on tap, organic lemonades and snacks. It hosts tastings, parties and pub quizzes, some in English. Open 3pm to midnight Monday to Wednesday, 3pm to 1am Thursday, 3pm to 3am Friday, 1pm to 3am Saturday and 1pm to 10pm Sunday.

   Craft & Draft

   Overtoom 417, 1054 JR Amsterdam · Tram 1, Rhijnvis Feithstraat

   Neighbourhood beer bar in Oud-West with about 40 taps and dozens of bottles and cans from Dutch and international craft breweries, plus a small terrace and takeaway. Open 4pm to midnight Sunday to Thursday and 4pm to 2am Friday and Saturday.

Getting there: Westergas is about 2.5 km from Centraal station. Take bus 21 to Van Hallstraat/Westergasfabriek, or tram 5, which terminates at Westergasfabriek. You can also walk it in about 25 minutes through the Haarlemmerbuurt. The route ends on the Overtoom, where tram 1 runs back towards Leidseplein.

This is the longest route. The first two legs are about 1.7 km each: Westergas to Hugo de Grootplein, then down through the Kinkerbuurt to the Overtoom. If your legs are tired, there are trams along the Kinkerstraat.

Optional detour: ’t Blauwe Theehuis in the Vondelpark is Brouwerij ’t IJ's park tasting room, a short walk from Gollem's Proeflokaal. Its hours weren't checked for this guide.

Gollem's Proeflokaal is the best place to stop for a proper meal on this route.
