Route 3 · "The Gowanus Crawl"

Carroll Gardens, Park Slope and Gowanus

  • 5 stops
  • About 3.1 km
  • Walking: About 40 min
  • Allow 4.5–5.5 hours

Best time: Tuesday to Sunday (Forever Brewing is listed as closed on Monday). Start at Other Half around 1–2pm and reach The Owl Farm after it opens at 2pm. The last three stops are within 200 m of each other; Wild East closes at 10pm Monday to Thursday (9pm Sunday), so visit it before Threes, which pours until midnight (11pm Sunday). Opening hours change, so check each venue before you set off.

The stops

  1. Other Half Brewing

    195 Centre Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231 · Smith-9th Sts (F/G), two blocks

Where Other Half began in 2014, at the meeting point of Carroll Gardens, Red Hook and Gowanus: the brewery that made New York synonymous with hazy, hoppy IPAs. Twenty draft beers (IPAs, lagers, wild ales, barrel-aged stouts) plus cider, wine and cans to go in a pleasantly sparse taproom. Light snacks only; bring your own food. Open noon to 10pm Monday to Thursday, noon to midnight Friday, 10am to midnight Saturday and 11am to 9pm Sunday.

  2. The Owl Farm

    297 9th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215 · 4 Av-9 St (F/G/R)

Park Slope's beer-and-cider bar, open since 2012, with 29 draft lines of beer, cider and wine, a cellar list of rare beers and ciders (including perry and imported cider) and a long spirits list. Open daily from 2pm until late.

  3. Forever Brewing

574 President Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215 · Union St (R)

New York's newest brewery (opened April 2026), and its only combined brewery, taproom and homebrew-supply shop, in the space Strong Rope occupied for ten years. A handful of its own beers (an Irish red, a farmhouse ale) on tap alongside beers from other New York City breweries, board games and big windows. Hours per a local guide (June 2026): 10am to 10pm Tuesday to Thursday, noon to 11pm Friday and Saturday and noon to 8pm Sunday; closed Monday.

  4. Wild East Brewing Co.

623 Sackett Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217

Gowanus brewery specialising in crisp Czech-style lagers (its Hexenkessel schwarzbier won at the 2026 New York State Governor's Cup), plus farmhouse ales, IPAs and sours, poured from a big U-shaped bar in a wood-panelled taproom. Cask Marque accredited; dogs and outside food welcome, with pop-ups most weekends. Open 2pm to 10pm Monday to Thursday, 2pm to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday and noon to 9pm Sunday.

  5. Threes Brewing

333 Douglass Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217 · Union St (R) or Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr

Threes' flagship brewpub, open since 2014: a big bar with house beers poured from serving tanks (lagers are the strength), guest beers, wine and cocktails, a large gravel backyard and food from Grand Army. Open noon to midnight Monday to Saturday and noon to 11pm Sunday.

Getting there: the F or G to Smith-9th Sts, about 25 minutes from Lower Manhattan. The route crosses the Gowanus Canal on 9th Street, then heads north up 4th Avenue.

Other Half to The Owl Farm (about 1.5 km) is the longest leg; after that, nothing is more than about 1 km apart.

Forever Brewing, Wild East and Threes sit within a couple of blocks of each other, the densest cluster of breweries in the city.

Bring food to Other Half and Wild East, or eat at Threes, which serves Grand Army's menu but doesn't allow outside food.

Grimm Tavern (659 Vanderbilt Avenue, Prospect Heights) is about 1.2 km east of Threes for dinner, but it's closed on Mondays and shuts at 5pm on Sundays.

Alcohol-free and pacing: ask at the bar for alcohol-free beers and soft drinks, and remember a half is always fine. Eat along the way, drink water between stops, and skip a stop whenever you like. More tips.
