Best time: Tuesday to Saturday, starting in Gaia at about 1pm. Espaço Porto Cruz is closed on Monday, and its terrace shuts at 7pm on Sunday. Quevedo and Cálem close at 7-8pm, and Cálem's last standard tour starts about 5:40pm, so do Gaia first and cross to the Porto side after 4pm, when Cask opens on weekdays (2pm at weekends). Finish at Musa das Virtudes for sunset. Opening hours change, so check each venue before you set off.
Rua de Santa Marinha 77, 4400-291 Vila Nova de Gaia · Metro Jardim do Morro (Line D), about 10 minutes downhill; or walk over the Dom Luís I lower deck from the Ribeira
Not beer: the Gaia tasting room and wine bar of Quevedo, a family Port and Douro wine producer. It's in a 200-year-old former cooperage two minutes up from the river. You can walk in for Port flights, a Port tonic or small plates, or book a seated tasting. Open every day, noon to 8pm from April to November and 11am to 7pm from December to March. Closed on 25 December.
Largo Miguel Bombarda 23, 4400-222 Vila Nova de Gaia
Not beer: Porto Cruz's Port wine centre in a restored 18th-century building on the Gaia riverside. It has a wine shop and tasting room on the ground floor, exhibitions, the deCastro Gaia restaurant, and the Terrace Lounge 360º rooftop bar, which looks over the Douro to the Ribeira and serves Port and Port cocktails. The terrace is open Tuesday to Saturday 12:30pm to midnight and Sunday 12:30pm to 7pm.
Avenida de Diogo Leite 344, 4400-111 Vila Nova de Gaia
Not beer: the riverside cellars of Cálem, a Port house founded in 1859, beside the Dom Luís I bridge. Visits combine an interactive museum, a guided tour of the cellars and a tasting. There are evening fado visits, and a wine bar with tasting flights and Port by the glass. Open every day from 10am to 7pm (closed 25 December and 1 January). The last standard tour starts at about 5:40pm.
Rua da Arménia 54, 4050-066 Porto
Down by the river in Miragaia, the Porto bar of Tough Love, a brewery from Esmoriz near Aveiro. It has 13 rotating taps of Portuguese beer and fridges of hard-to-find international cans (the bar has stocked the likes of Lervig and Ārpus). The food is fried bar snacks. Open Monday to Thursday 4pm to midnight, Friday 4pm to 1am, Saturday 2pm to 1am and Sunday 2pm to midnight.
Passeio das Virtudes 28, 4050-629 Porto · About 15 minutes uphill on foot to the Baixa (Cordoaria and Clérigos)
The Porto bar of Lisbon brewer Musa, with 15 taps of its beers and guests and a terrace facing the Passeio das Virtudes, Porto's favourite sunset spot over the Douro. Musa's own site lists Monday to Thursday 3pm to 11:30pm, Friday 3pm to midnight, Saturday 12:30pm to midnight and Sunday 12:30pm to 11:30pm. The kitchen runs from 4pm on weekdays and 1pm at weekends.
This route is beer and Port: the three Gaia stops are Port lodges, not beer bars. Port is fortified wine, at about 19-22% ABV, so use small pours or share flights, and drink water between stops.
Getting there: walk over the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge from the Ribeira, or take metro Line D to Jardim do Morro and walk down. Quevedo is two minutes up Rua de Santa Marinha from the riverside.
Cálem to Cask (about 1.5 km) is the long leg. Cross the Dom Luís I bridge on its lower deck, then walk west along the riverside past the Ribeira and the Alfândega (customs house) to Miragaia. Cask to Musa (about 300 m) is a short but steep climb up to the Passeio das Virtudes.
Cellar tours (Cálem, and the other lodges on our tours list) are best booked ahead. The wine bars at Quevedo and Cálem and the Porto Cruz terrace take walk-ins.
More Port lodges are within a few minutes of this route (Sandeman, Ferreira, Cockburn's, and Graham's and Taylor's up the hill). See the Port wine tours on our Porto tours page.
